 UNDERSTANDING MILITARIA COLLECTING
Welcome to the interesting world of collecting military items. One of the purposes behind this web site is to promote the appreciation and understanding of the field.

One of the most prolific hobbies in this country and abroad is the collecting and researching of militaria (military artifacts and accouterments). There are literally thousands of different items related to the military forces of the world. The choices can be staggering. As a newcomer to this area, there are some things that you might want to keep in mind in order to enhance the experience.
  1. Define the your area of interest. Some of the collectibles can be rather big (i.e. aircraft ejection seats). Others are more manageable (i.e. medals, awards, etc). Your choice may depend on the amount of space available at your home.
  2. Define the period.  This refers to the year of interest.  For example; WWI, WWII, Korean war, etc.
  3. Learn as much as possible. More and more books are being written every day. Make an investment in this area. The information will prove invaluable when you are getting ready to make a purchase.
  4. Quantity vs. Quality.  Condition is everything in the world of collecting.  Mint condition items will be more expensive but they will hold their value more effectively.  They will also appreciate faster and are easier to sell or trade.  There will be times when you will have to make a choice between purchasing one mint item or several so-so items.  Make sure you know what you want to do ahead of time.
