KOREAN WAR US ARMY M-1951 FIELD JACKET
This is a US Army field jacket. model M-1951. As used duting the Korean war. The field
jacket retained very much the same style as those employed in WWII. Of four pocket
construction. Manufactured of light-weight canvis. The pockets were closed shut by
flaps which were secured by small, plastic brown buttons.
As for value is concerned, the Korean war jackets lag behind its close cousin, the WWII
jacket. This may be due to the fact that people are not as familiarized with this
conflict as much as others. The number of movies and literature about the Korean war
is less than WWII or Vietnam.
The jacket had the ability to accept a liner for extreme cold weather use. The sample shown here
displays the liner. Which was secured to the jacket via the use of buttons.
The shoulder of the jacket has a set of epilets. Secured at one end by a plastic button.
The inside of the jacket is stamped with black ink. This was very characteristic of the Korean
war.
The marking would contain information such as instructions for use, manufacturing date, color,
material of construction, etc. The problem with marking clothing this way is that the letters
fade with wear. As the jacket is washed or exposed to the sun, the lettering becomes much harder
to read.
The type of font employed was also very characteristic of the period. In many cases that is one
of the most effective ways of telling the age of the item.
