US Army Airborne Scrolls - Vietnam War -
Airborne forces are military units, usually light infantry, set up to be moved by aircraft and 'dropped'
into battle. Thus they can be placed behind enemy lines, and have an ability to deploy almost anywhere with little warning. The formations are limited only by the number and size of their aircraft, so given enough capacity a huge force can appear "out of nowhere" in minutes, an action referred to as vertical envelopment.
One way in which Airborne units distinguished themselves from the rest is by the use of the "Airborne" tab.
This was a small, semicircular patch to be placed above a unit patch on the sleeve. The following is a series of
examples of the Airborne patch.
FIRST SAMPLE - Machine made tab. This is an official patch issued by the US Army. Green color with
black letters. Also known as the "subdued" type. Meant to be worn with fatigues.

SECOND SAMPLE - This is a Theater made Airborne tab. it appears that uniform material was employed to
create it. borders were reinforced with black thread. The lettering is uneven. Clearly a hand-made patch.
This is the type of quality expected from the mom and pop operations where soldiers would go to have hand-made
clolth insignia. This is an un-official insignia not issued by the US Army.
THIRD SAMPLE - machine made patch. Manufactured to be worn with the Class A dress uniform. Sanctioned and
issued by the US Army.
