WWII GERMAN POLICE LONG SERVICE MEDAL -
The WWII German Police force was more of a paramilitary organization. After the rise of Hitler, in addition to keeping the law and order the police force was used to track and control any person or group that disagreed with the Third Reich. The idea was to neutralize the opposition.
The item featured here is a German police long service medal. As issued during WWII.
The design of the medal consists of a dark blue ribbon. An eagle has been attached to this example, however,
that is not a standard featured. It was added by the recipient or by someone else later.
The medal itself is a cross of metal construction. The arms of the cross are connected by a wreath that forms
a circle. The intersection point of all the arms is a square. The front of the square displays a black
swastika. The back has the words "Fur Treue Dienste" written on it.

The German police was fractured and divided into many organizations due to the fact that Germany was originally a group of
different states.
In 1936 Hitler appointed Heinrich Himmler to Chief of Police and Interior Ministry (Chef der Deutschen Polizei im
Reichsministerium des innem). This was a new position whose goal was to unify all the different police departments into
a more centralized organization. Some of the new police forces he created included the SS Special Forces troops,
fire protection police, land customs service, water customs service and the regular police. This list does not represent
a complete compilation of all the police forces.
One of the first orders of buisness taken was to redesign the uniforms and organize the rank system.
Because of the extensive nature of the various organizations which composed the police force there was an dizzying array
of items that were produced for the force. Patches, metal insignia, cloth insignia, medals, badges, shoulder boards are
just a small example of the items that they used. These items have now become collectibles and are sought after with
different degrees of desire. Some of the items are rare and valuable while others are not so.

The medal is attached to the ribbon by using a suspension ring.
The back of the eagle that is attached to the ribbon has a couple of markings in the back. The letter "A", which
is the logo for Assmann, a well known manufacturer of awards. The words Ges Gesch are also written in
raised letters.
