This badge was created on June 1st 1940. The requirements for earning this award were very much like
those established for the Silver Tank badge, except that this award was allotted for non-tank personnel
such as those manning armored vehicles, self propelled guns, etc. Also eligible for this award were
medical personnel who accompanied the units to battle.
The typical construction of this badge included the pin back illustrated on the pictures below. This
particular example has a flat back and the maker's brand by the loop.
Notice the close-up of the manufacturer's brand stamped on the back of the badge. Also a
close-up look at
the loop of the badge is provided here.
The badge can be broken down into the pin, the pin retainer and the body (bottom left picture). Notice how
cleanly the base of the pin is attached to the body of the badge and the shape of the base itself. These
are important factors when trying to establish the originality of the piece. Front center from the base of
the base of the pin shows some wear due to the fact that this is where the pin touches the body when closed.
The retainer pin moves in and out to secure the pin (bottom left picture). A close-up
view of the pin mechanism
is displayed (bottom right picture).
The badge was issued in a packet along with a document that was signed by the unit's commander. The award was
worn on the lower left brest of the uniform.
