WWII German Stickpin - Infantry Assalt On Silver -
This is a German WWII stick pin. These items were issued to military, civilian and political individuals for various reasons. In the case of military personnel, a stickpin was given along with a full size award. The soldier could wear the stick pin in the tunic instead of having to sport the full size badge.

The infantry assault badge was designed by C.E. Juncker of Berlin with direction provided by the OKH. The badge was instituted on December 20th 1939 by Generaloberst Von Braunchitsch. It awarded to infantry men.

The design consisted of an oval wreath of oak leaves with an eagle placed in the top portion. The eagle has its wings retracted, the head is facing to the right and it is clutching a swastika. Part of the eagle extended beyond the confines of the wreath.

A k98 rifle with a fixed bayonet crosses the wreath at an angle where the muzzle points to the left.

The award was widely ditributed and manufactured by a large number of companies.
The award came in two classes; silver and bronze. The criteria for receiving the silver award was defined as follows:

NUMBER CRITERIA DESCRIPTION
1 To have taken part in a minimum of three infantry assault operations.
2 To have taken part in a minimum of three infantry assault counter-attacks. This number may include a combination of infantry assault operations as well.
3 To have taken part in three or more armed reconnaissance operations.
4 To have been engaged in hand to hand combat in an assault position.
5 To have taken part in the restitution of a combat position over a period of three different days.

The back of this stick pin does not have any markings. However, other examples may be manufacturer marked. The pin attaches directly to the main body.

This stick pin was issued to Army soldiers who met the qualifications for the Silver class. The stickpin was issued in conjunction with a full size badge. The award came in a paper packet and the recipient was also issued with a document.
