WWII GERMAN LUTWAFFE COMMUNICATIONS DRESS HAT
The Luftwaffe (derived from the words "Luft"= air and "Waffe"=weapon) is a generic German
term for an air force. It is also the official name for two of the four historic German air
forces, the Wehrmacht air arm founded in 1933 and disbanded in 1946.
The item featured here is a German WWII hat. As issued by the Luftwaffe.
The design of the hat consisted of a dark blue wool construction
with a black elastic-like material applied to the center. A black leather bill with
a black leather chin strap complimented the appearance of the hat. Orange piping is
applied to the perimeter. This color indicated the function of the soldier, which is
communications.
This hat was issued to personnel involved in the radio and telephone field. Anything
related to operating the equipment, setting it up in the field, repairing it, etc.
The hat was outfitted with a Luftwaffe metal eagle. It was secured to the hat via the
use of prongs. The design of the eagle consisted of fully extended wings, flying to
the right. One of the talons is clutching a swastika while the other is being held up
in the air.
Just below the eagle is a metal cockade. The design consists of half a wreath with a
black and red circle in the middle. Arms extend to the left and right of the wreath.
Very nice quality to the detailing.
The chin strap is held to the side of the hat via the use of small black metal
buttons.
