Korean war US Army SD-1 Drone -
This is the first remote control spy drone employed by the US Army. Manufactured in 1959. The
drone had a 30 minute flight time. The way it was operated involved launching the drone from a
fixed platform (sling shot type action), flying it over the area where photos needed to be taken,
flying it back and holding a circling flight pattern until the engine ran out of gas. At this
point the drone would plommet to the ground. A parachute was deployed from the top section
providing for a somehow smoother landing.
Damage would occur to the drone because the landing was fairly hard.
Similar drones were employed for target practice. However, the one featured here has a different
feature from the tearget drones. It has a circular opening in the bottom of the chasis. This is
where the TV or photo camara would be placed. Another difference is the housing for the
parachute.
