branch during WWII. But rather it was a part of the Army. Hence the name Army Air Corp or Army Air Force

PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE 56TH FIGHTER GROUP
The 56th Fighter Group was an air combat unit of the United States Army Air Forces during the
Second World War and as the 56th Operations Group, is a current unit of the United States Air
Force. Created in 1941 as part of the expansion of the AAF immediately prior to World War II,
the 56th FG was the first fighter group to receive and operate the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter.
The current USAF group flies F-16 Fighting Falcons.
This section provides a very complete pictorial record of the members of the fighter group and
the actions performed in the European theater.

B-26 HEROES
The Martin Corporation produced the B-26 Marauder, the Widow Maker, to fight in the South Pacific theater. in 1943 the
Army Air Corps and Martin decided to bring back home 2 B-26's who had excelled in comnbat against the Japanese forces. This
page chronicles the story of the bombers and their triumphant return home.
