The Ground Assault badge was issued to Luftwaffe personnel in recognition of combat action in the front lines in the ground, as opposed to action in the air like pilots and aircraft crewmen.

German soldiers wore the badges in their combat uniforms when they went into battle. In the process of runing around the badges were damaged. The most common problem was the breakage of the hinge or the catch. In these cases field repairs are performed.

The name of the manufacturer or its logo was often stamped to the back of the badge. The one stamped on this example reads "Dresden". However, it is important to know that not all of the badges were marked.

The Luftaffe Ground Assault badge was of two piece construction. The Luftwaffe eagle was a separate piece. The eagle was attached to the main body via the use of a rivet. this piece is not visible in this example due to the field repair.
