K98 Bayonet -
The Karabiner 98 Kurz (often abbreviated Kar98k, K98, or K98k) was a bolt-action rifle adopted as the standard infantry
rifle in 1935 by the German Wehrmacht, and was one of the final developments in the long line of Mauser military
rifles.
The 98K bayonet was initially developed for combat purposes. However,
later designs included those to be used at social events, such as the bayonet featured here.
These were known as parade bayonets.
Among them were those adorned with stag handles.
The bayonet featured here was produced for the Luftwaffe.
|
The design of the bayonet consisted of black plastic handles with a tight checkered pattern.
Two rivets are used to secure the handles. The pommel is the "dove" ehad type. A spring release
button is placed at one side of the pommel even though this bayoent was never meant to be
secured to a rifle.
The cross guard was of a single arm extending to one side and ending in a rounded, upwardly
bent piece.
The scabbard is of metal construction. Painted black. A hook is placed to one side, its
purpose is to anchor the leather frog. The frog is cab be black or brown in color.
|
The blade is fully chromed. It is of single edge design. A blood groove is placed near
the spine on one side. The manufacturer's logo
is stamped at the base of the blade. It consists of the head of a knight facing left. The
initals WKC are placed just below. WKC was a well known manufacturer of edge weapons during
Nazi Germany.

WKC provided a few designs for the engraved blades. Their work was of very high quality. It
was very expensive at the time for a soldier to have his parade bayonet adorned in this fashion
so not a large number of these blades were manufactured.
This particular design consisted of a flying eagle with the "droop" tail, clutching a Swastika.
This is an early war design. The words "Meime Diensbeit" are written to one side.

Germany produced a few variations of bayonets during the war. The high quality construction of these blades
have made them great collectibles. The item featured here is hard to find. Specially with an engraved blade.
In general its appreciation has been good. It is likely this trend will continue for the next few years.
