WWII US Army Field Compass -
This is an early version of a US Army field compass. Originally issued during World War One. It was common for
these type of items to be re-issued for use in World War Two.
Silver color, round metal body construction. "US" is stamped on the front cover. A button releases the cover which
is hinged to one side. A loop is provided so the compass can be carried as a pocket watch. as a matter of fact its
design ressembles one faithfully.
The design of the compass was very basic. It did not do much more than point north. It did not provide some of the
other functions that future compasses did. Later in the war a newer and better type of
compass was issued. however, there were times when the soldier
would buy his own. This was known as private purchase compass .
