WWII GERMAN M-42 HELMET ANATOMY AND CONSTRUCTION


The helmets of Germany came in a variety of designs. The following is an analysis of one of those helmets. Detailed photographs and terminology are given to provide the enthusiast and collector with a better understanding of this fascinating aspect of militaria.

Decals were commonly applied to the side of the helmet as a way to identify the branch of service or unit to which the sodier belonged.

Decals may be applied to one side or both sides. They were employed by military, para-military and civilian organizations alike.

 




some of the unique characteristics of the M-42 combat steel helmet are outlined in the following photographs.



The vents on the side of the dome are fully integrated into the helmet. They are slightly raised from the surface and are of circular shape.

Information such as the serial number, size and manuacturer's code is stamped on the inner portions of the side and neckguard.

The leather chin strap is attached to the "D" ring. Unlike its predecessor, the M-35 helmet, The rim of the helmet is exposed as opposed to being rolled.
