WWI US MILITARY FIELD GEAR - Military gear has evolved in every war. WWI presents an interesting point for the American combat gear because it marks the begining of a transition period from civil war-like gear to the modern equipment. WWI was the spring board for much of the development that occurred during WWII.

WWI US MILITARY FIELD GEAR COLLECTIBLES

This section covers the field gear employed by the US armed forces during World War One. Most of the gear was manufactured from canvis and wood. Withe the exception of mess related items, metal was used primarily in the manuacturing of fasteners and buckles. This is a very interesting war collectible.

WWI US ARMY GAS MASK - Gas attacks were used during WWI. This is the gas mask employed by the US Army in the battle field. Retains the corrugated hose attaching to the filter.


WWI US ARMY HAVERSACK PACK - This is one of the first formal backpacks employed by the US Army. Of canvis construction. Experimental green color.


WWI US ARMY CANVIS COLLAPSIBLE TRUNK - Of canvis construction. Khaki color with a black ink US stamp applied to the front. This device was employed as a trunk on the field.


1918 WWI US ARMY CANTEEN - This is a US Army field canteen. Round shape. Tin construction with a canvis cover. Khaki color. The cap has a wire circle on top.




WWI US ARMY GAS MASK WITH POUCH - This is a gas mask and canvis carrying bag. The rubber corrugated hose has deteriorated over time. Yellowed lenses. Filter is present.


WWI US ARMY PILOT GLOVES - This is a set of brown leather gloves with fleece lining. Designed to keep the pilot warm in the open cockpits of the time.


1918 WWI US ARMY CANTEEN AND COVER - This is the standard cover for the field canteen. Two flaps, each having a snap. US marked in front. Brass wire hangers.


WWI US NAVY OFFICER DRESS BELT - This is a US Navy officer's dress belt and buckle. Black leather construction belt with a round buckle which has an eagle atop an anchor.




WWI US ARMY UTILITY BELT - This is a utility belt. Of canvis construction. Brass fittings which include three sets of gromets all around. No markings are found.


WWI US ARMY ROUND COMPASS - This is the standard compass used by the Army during WWI. Round shape. Enclosed in a silver structure. Glass front.

WWI US ARMY M-1917 FIELD PHONE - This is the standard field phone for the US army. Complete with the wooden box. The handset hangs on the outside when the phone is in use.


WWI US ARMY FIELD MEDICAL BED - This is a US army medical field bed. Consisting of a wooden folding frame with khaki colored canvis as a base. Taller than a normal military cot.


WWI US ARMY TRUNK - This is a wooden trunk enforced on the corners and sides with metal inserts. Information abou the owner is painted on the top.


WWI US ARMY CANTEEN - This is a US Army cantten, cup and cover. The cover is of canvis construction. Khaki in color with a black "US" stamped in front.




WWI US ARMY GRENADE VEST - Of canvis construction. Khaki color. Multiple pockets with a cover and snap on each. This is how US Army soldiers carried grenades.


WWI US ARMY GLOVES - This is a set of US Army field gloves. Of leather and canvis construction. General purpose use.


WWI US ARMY TRENCH LIGHTER - This type of lighter was used by American forces during WWI. A lanyard loop is provided in the bottom section.

1915 WWI US ARMY HOLSTER - This is a Rock Island arsenal holster for the .45 cal pistol. Brown leather construction. Dated 1915. Rotating brass section on top.

WWI US ARMY 1907 FUZE - Of brass construction. Graduated lines applied to the body allow for various settings of the fuze. Screwed to the top of the shell.

WWI US ARMY 1917 FUZE - This is the fuze that was screwd to the top of an artillery shell. Of brass construction. Several rings with graduated measures.



1917 WWI US ARMY SHELL - This is a 15 mm American artillery shell. Complete with the fuze which retains the locking ring. Green body.

WWI US FRENCH PHRASE BOOK - This is a booklet that was issued to soldiers heading to France. Dated 1917.

WWI US HOMEFRONT AND PERSONAL ITEMS COLLECTIBLES

As in many other wars, a large amount of non-combat items were created to be used by the soldiers. Things like jewelry, ornaments, etc. were manufactured and sold at military bases or civilian stores. This section of the web site examines such pieces. This is an interesting aspect of WWI military collectibles.
